Excerpt from Poetical Remains
The history of this little volume is simply as follows: -
In days of severe public anxiety, when each new peril and distress of the Church was felt to their very heart"s core by her faithful and ardent sons, and also in seasons of physical depression arising in the course of many years, my father ever found in Poetry his refreshment and restorative. Often, after long hours at his desk, he used to take a short respite in his garden, with a Spanish poem in his pocket for reference if necessary, and, while busily raking or weeding his lawn, or in winter pacing up and down a favourite terrace-walk, would set himself to "turn" or "mend" a Sonnet. Then he would come in, with eyes brightened and brow cleared, to give us the result of his "play-time."
