The False Friend was produced, about the end of January, or beginning of February, 1702, at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. It was published, in 4to, and without the author"s name, on the 10th of February of the same year. The title page of the original edition reads as follows: - "The False Friend, a Comedy. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal in Drury-lane, By his Majesty"s Servants. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, within Gray"s Inn Gate, next Gray"s Inn Lane, 1702."
Genest was mistaken in supposing The False Friend to have been taken from Dancourt"s comedy of La Trahison Punic, which was first produced on the 28th of November, 1707, nearly six years later than Vanbrugh"s play. Both plays were, in (act, borrowed from the same source - a Spanish comedy, entitled La Traicion busca el Castigo, published at Madrid in 1640, and written by Don Francisco de Rojas y Zorrilla, one of the great dramatists of Spain. But The False Friend, it is certain, was not taken directly from the Spanish.
