This little book is unhappily not behind the times. Non-supernatural theories of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ are not yet dead. It may be true, as Schaff says, that they are "standing jokes" in the fashionable circles of Germany, but it is not true that they are jokes amongst more serious if, in some respects, less educated people.

At one time these theories may have influenced fashionable circles only, now they are openly discussed in weekly sceptical newspapers, in cheap pamphlets assiduously circulated, by lectures in public halls and open spaces in cities, towns and villages, to hundreds and sometimes to several thousands of persons. The writer has constantly read these papers, heard these lectures, spoken to these congregations, and for some years it was his daily and often heart-breaking duty to try to clear away these theories from the minds of men and women, young and old.
