The career of a literary man is usually suggestive of a quiet, uneventful life, devoid of the heroic excitements of war, or the adventurous incidents of the explorer of new worlds, or of the pioneer settler of the wilderness. The following sketch is no exception to this general rule; and yet the almost threescore and ten years accorded to him whose life-work we propose to portray, present a picture of varied interest, of which few countries, save our own, can furnish an example.
