Excerpt from Orations, Lectures, and Addresses
Ralph Waldo Emerson, the highly gifted author of the following orations, is unquestionably one of the greatest men that America has yet produced. He was born in Boston, U. S., in 1803, and studied at Cambridge, where he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Arts, in 1820, in the 18th year of his age. Having turned his attention to theology he was appointed pastor of an Unitarian congregation in his native city, but having embraced some peculiar views in reference to the Holy Sacrament, he relinquished his spiritual charge.
