Excerpt from Public School Sermons
To say that there is a strong tie of brotherhood between our great Public Schools is happily now a truism. It is one of the binding forces of English society; it contributes visibly to the social, political, and religious unity of the nation; and yet its growth has been comparatively recent, like some at least of the causes which have led to it. It has been fostered by athletic competitions, by intimacies between the friends of brothers educated at different schools, by common action for common educational purposes, and further, in a very high degree, by the constantly recurring fact that the distinguished alumni of one school become the distinguished Masters or Assistant Masters of another. These emigrants carry with them, to the colonies of their choice, the sacred fire of their mother city. Arnold takes Winchester to Rugby.
