Excerpt from The Ottomans in Europe: Or Turkey in the Present Crisis, With the Secret Societies Maps
The maps given in this work were got up by two distinct parties. The first is that of the Omladina, or Republican branch of the Slavs; the other is Imperial and Russian, both in its conception and purpose. There are several other maps of a similar kind in circulation, but those given in this work are the most characteristic of the aspirations of the Slavs.
I first became acquainted with the Omladina map in 1856, when a Polish gentleman - a native, I believe, of Warsaw - visited Paris, London, and other large cities, for the purpose of lecturing to his countrymen and others who took an interest in the subject, on Panslavism, which was then a new word to me. He believed, one might also say lived, in his map. There it was, and the work to be done was foreshadowed in it!
