Unlike the settlement of the New England colonies which began through religious persecution, that of New York and other Middle States began through the commercial enterprise of merchants of the Old World.
Hendrick Hudson, an Englishman, sailing in the employ of Holland merchants, started on his voyage of discovery in the "Half-Moon," April 6, 1609, from Amsterdam, and came to anchor in the "Great River of the Mountains," September 11, 1609. He ascended the river as far as Albany, and after formally taking possession of the whole domain which he had discovered in the name of the States-General of Holland, he sailed for England.
Upon the announcement of these discoveries at home, the enterprising merchants of North Holland, under whose auspices they had been made, united themselves into a company and received from the States-General a special trading-license or charter, dated October 11, 1614.
