In the personal feelings by which a writer, of whatever class, is actuated in the publication of a work, the reader cannot be supposed to feel much interest; and if a book answer to its pretensions, lie is probably satisfied, without caring to be informed why it has been printed. A very few lines therefore might suffice as to the motives which have led a female to an undertaking scarcely to be expected from such a source; since they would be, as truly as briefly, expressed by styling the following Catalogue the concluding act of an endeavour, ardently persisted in during sixteen years, to justify the great confidence reposed in the compiler, when the Collection described was placed at her uncontrolled disposal. A lady"s pen, however, must claim the privilege of a lady"s tongue, and crave excuse if it be not Satisfied with the briefest possible terms in which to explain its purpose.
