Excerpt from Celebration of the Eighty-Sixth Anniversary of the Independence of the United States, in Chicago, July 4th, 1862
On the 23d day of June, 1862, resolutions presented by Alderman J. Q. Hoyt, favoring the celebration by the City of Chicago of the coming 4th of July, were acted upon at full meeting of the Board, and unanimously passed.
In conformity to the spirit of these resolves, committees were appointed and a programme of proceedings adopted.
On the morning of the 4th, One Hundred Guns were ordered to be fired, and all the bells of the city to be rung for an hour, commencing at sunrise.
