The writer through some twenty years of close contact with secondary education as teacher, high school principal, and director of training schools, has modified materially his own ideas concerning the function of the American high school and particularly concerning the function of the various high school subjects. The chief factor in bringing about this changed attitude has been the insight into the fundamental facts of adolescent life that has come to the writer from the lives of the many adolescent boys and girls with whom he has had the pleasure of living on the most friendly terms. Out of the many confidences that have come to him as an advisor of youth has come fuller appreciation of the crucial nature of the adolescent period and deeper sympathy for the high school boys and girls in their struggle toward maturity. Out of administrative experiences has come the firm conviction that the high schools of this country will in time become really Americanized.
