The study of English has many aspects, each of which appeals with varying intensity to different minds.
Leaving English literature and the art of writing good English for others more competent than the present writer to deal with these branches of the subject, this treatise, will consider the study of the English Language from the historical point of view, and endeavour to emphasize some of the fundamental principles which are involved in such a treatment of the Mother Tongue. We shall hope to show that herein lie elements of such a general and special educational value that this aspect of the study of our native language deserves to penetrate, far more vitally than at present, the whole fabric of education in this country.
It would be interesting and instructive to discuss the possibilities of a proper co-ordination of English Language teaching throughout the three great types of educational institutions - the Universities, the Training Colleges, and the Secondary Schools. But such a theme would demand for its adequate treatment, not a pamphlet of the present size, but a considerable tome.
