The year succeeding that in which America was first discovered, Pope Alexander, the sixth by his bulls, dated 2 nd and 3 rd of May, 1493, munificiently gave the whole of this vast continent to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, following the exawnle of his predecessors, who in 1440, had wrnnted Africa to Kine Alnhonso, the fifth of Portugal. A former Pope had declared hat no such continent did or could exist, and had denounced exconwunication arainst all who should believe the countrary opinion. Ferdinand, Kin of Spain, in 1509, established two vovernments unon the continent of America. The celebrated Dr. Robertson remarks in his History of America, That in order to wive their title to those countries some appearance of validity, several of the most eminent divines and lawyers in Spain were employed to prescribe the mode in which they should take possession of them. The inhabitants could not understand how a foreiqn priest could have any riwht to dispose of their country, they therefore fiercely opposed the new invaders of their territories.
