Excerpt from Union Pacific Railroad, 1866: A Geological Agricultural Survey of 100 Miles West of Omaha
Dear Sir:
The Board of Experts having received from you a commission to examine the Geology and Agriculture of the first 100 miles of the Union Pacific Railroad, Prof. Thos. Egleston, Jr., was charged with the personal reconnoissance of the ground. The unanimous report of this Board, embodying the results of his examination, is herewith respectfully submitted.
Prof. Egleston desires thanks to be given to his Assistants, Messrs. Hale, Harmer, and Chester, students of the School of Mines of Columbia College; to Capt. Hollins, guide of his party; to the officers of the Railroad Company, and to the citizens of Nebraska generally, who were everywhere ready to facilitate his survey.
