The objects of this book are threefold: to summarise the condition of lunatics in India and the means available for treating them; to emphasise the importance of tox?mias as ?tiological factors in the production of a very large proportion of such cases, and the immense aid a proper recognition of this fact is in our treatment of these conditions; and, lastly, to place on record views which a wide and varied experience of the East, spread over some nineteen years, has given rise to, and which may perhaps be of interest to the psychiatrical world.
The fulfilment of these objects has entailed dealing with insanity from many and varied aspects. Throughout my work, however, I have tried to keep the needs of the medical and legal professions in India before me, and to supply their requirements, while placing the true condition of the mentally affected in this country before my readers and indicating means for its amelioration.
