Gentlemen, - Some of you, perhaps, remember that I endeavoured, at the commencement of my Lectures on Midwifery, to point out to you the various respects in which the generative system plays a more important part in the organism of woman than in that of the man. I called your attention to its constantly recurring activity, as displayed in the periodical return of menstruation, to its far-reaching influence as manifested in the various phenomena which attend upon pregnancy and labour, and to the impress which the whole body bears of the special adaptation of every part for the most complete performance of its functions. I pointed out to you, how, as the child grows, the womb grows with it ; how its lowly organized tissues become developed; its vessels increase in size; nerve-matter is deposited within the sheaths, so delicate as to have been almost imperceptible before ; and the uterus becomes at length what old anatomists have not hesitated to call it, - Miraculum Natur?.
