So, too, in the North; for when the fathers of New England arrived in that part of America, they found it in the possession of a great variety of people - the woods were alive with red men. But nation after nation disappeared from their path, and in 1792, there were but eighteen hundred and fifty left of the Pequods, the Narragan-setts, the Pawkunnawkuts, the Massachusetts, and the Pawtuckets, all of whom were included within the boundaries of a single state, though one hundred and seventy years before, these very tribes alone were able to bring into the field eighteen thousand warriors.
