Excerpt from The Hampton L. Carson Collection of Engraved Portraits, Vol. 3: Of Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Presidents and Members of the Continental Congress, Officers in the American Revolutionary War, Views of Independence Hall
This Catalogue forms the third portion of the Hampton L. Carson Collection of Engraved Portraits, embracing the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Presidents of the Continental Congress, Members of the Continental Congress, and Generals and Officers in the Revolutionary War. The importance of this grouping will be understood when we take into consideration the fact that it embraces the Clarence B. Bement collection, which had a world-wide reputation for its many rarities, as well as Mr. Carson's own very valuable collection, the two combined making the most important in the country.
The facsimiles, as handsome as they are, hardly convey a proper idea of the beauty and rarity of the originals, and of course it is impossible for me to attempt to describe them, or even make short mention of them in these remarks, there being so many gems in the collection; as, for instance, the unique portrait of John Hancock by Paul Revere, the Mercury of the Revolution (we say unique from the fact that it is the only known copy); the many beautiful and rare mezzotintos of Saml. Adams, John Hancock, Henry Laurens, Genl. Chas. Lee, Genl. Horatio Gates, Genl. Israel Putnam, Genl. Nathaniel Greene, Genl. Jno. Sullivan, Genl. Benedict Arnold, etc. These and many other remarkable features of the collection arc noticed in the contents on the next page following.
In conclusion, we need only say that for those interested in collecting Rare American Portraits, and for those employing their time in the delightful hobby of "extra-illustrating," they cannot fail to find many items that will surely win their admiration and excite their envy. It is quite possible that such an opportunity may never occur again.
