Excerpt from Life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti
In the following compilation Rossetti is studied principally as a writer. With his paintings I have no very extensive acquaintance, nor have I the ability to pronounce upon them a judgment. Full use has been made of the very valuable labours of my predecessors, Mr. William Sharp and Mr. Hall Caine. I am glad to acknowledge my great indebtedness to Mr. Ford Madox Brown and Mr. William Rossetti for the privilege of access to the correspondence of Rossetti, and, in the case of the latter, for constant and most friendly services. Early associates of Rossetti who now occupy a foremost place in art and letters have been obligingly communicative and kind, placing at my disposal letters and recollections. If I do not mention the names of those to whom my warmest acknowledgments are due, it is because I do not wish to make the porch too ornate and distinguished for the edifice.
