Excerpt from Bellum Gallicum
This edition of Book V. of Caesar's Gallic War differs to some extent from former editions of Caesar. Exercises designed to simplify the first lessons in translation have been inserted; a connected precis, in Latin and mainly in Caesar's own words, of the story of Books I.-IV. has been added with a view to providing those teachers who wish it with material of a simple nature for sight work in junior classes. Headings, furnishing the reader at a glance with an outline of the story and its main subdivisions, have been put in with a view to arousing that interest in the subject matter without which no pupil can ever learn to "read" Latin properly. It is hoped that this edition will go far to intensify and quicken the Revival of Classical Study that has already begun in our schools.
