Cornelius Nepos, whose praenomen is unknown, was a native of Cisalpine Gaul, and born about 100 B.C. He was a literary man, held in high esteem by some of the best judges of the day. The first epigram of Catullus is a dedication to Nepos of his book, in which he alludes to former praise bestowed on him by Nepos, and speaks of the latter's learning and industry. Cicero in a letter to Atticus speaks of Nepos as "immortal", and expresses surprise that, when Nepos thinks Cicero's favourite works unreadable, he should wish to read any of them. Aulus Gellius says he was a very intimate friend of Cicero. The elder Pliny quotes him as an authority for the growth of luxury, making him speak of the change in fashion at Rome during his lifetime as regards purple dye, and again for the statement that Mamurra, who had been in command of Caesar's engineers in Gaul, was the first Roman to cover the walls of his house with marble. He died probably between 24 and 20 B.C. He is said by ancient writers to have been the author of the following: - 1. Chronica, to which Catullus in his dedication refers; 2. Exemplorum Libri; 3. De Viris Illustribus, of which the following lives and others are all that we have left beyond a few fragments in quotations; 4. Lives of Cato and Cicero, to the first of which he alludes in the short account of Cato given in this volume.
