Excerpt from The Holy Catholic Church: Its Divine Ideal, Ministry, and Institutions; A Short Treatise With a Catechism on Each Chapter Forming a Course of Methodical Instruction on the Subject
This Book is published in obedience to a call, which the Author felt himself unable to resist. So long ago as 1868, several influential clergymen took the opportunity offered them by the Wolverhampton Congress of meeting together to discuss, and consider the remedy for, the ignorance so extensively prevalent on the subject of the Church. It appeared to them that even those who are more or less competently acquainted with the rudiments of the Christian Religion, are often (from want of instruction) lamentably deficient in knowledge respecting the Church, - her claims, her title-deeds, her powers, and the grounds on which she claims the allegiance of her children.
