Excerpt from To the Golden Land: Sketches of a Trip to Southern California
These sketches were hastily penned amid the hurry of travel for publication in the Newcastle Daily Chronicle, the Sunderland Daily Echo, and certain other English newspapers. Complaisant friends have expressed a desire to have them in book form; therefore this volume appears.
If any of the public at large choose to buy it, they must take it for what it is worth.
I call Southern California the Golden Land, in part because for a generation we have drawn from it the most precious of metals, in part because when I left it its mountain sides and spreading mesas and sheltered valleys were covered with a golden efflorescence rich beyond compare.
To H. P., J. W. V., and F. G. S., my pleasant companions in many a glorious drive, I dedicate the volume. If it should please no one else, it will please them. And that will suffice The Writer.
