Excerpt from The Destiny of the American Negro: Or as an Eagle Stirreth Up Her Nest
It is remarkable, indeed, that I, of all men, should be led, "as I believe," by the Spirit of God to write this message of hope and inspiration to my people. For as early in life as I can remember, I felt that the Negro, "Ishmael-like," had his hand against every man (himself included) and that every man's hand was against him. I even felt that God himself didn't love a Negro as He did other races. Consequently by reason of the forces arrayed against him, it was impossible for him to rise.
