Excerpt from Biographical Record of the Alumni and Non-Graduates of Amherst College, Vol. 2: Classes '72-'96; 1871 1896
The first volume of the Biographical Record of the Alumni of Amherst College, including the first fifty classes, was published in 1883. Its purpose was to supplement Professor Tyler's History of the college, with its view of the college life, the life of its teachers, trustees and benefactors, by presenting also the biographies of its graduates and thus serving to complete the view given of the work accomplished and the influence exerted by the college during the first half century of its existence. The character of the Record and the difficulties encountered during the ten years of its preparation are described by Professor Tyler in his Introduction to that volume.
After the 75th anniversary of the college it was proposed to prepare and publish a similar work for the third quarter-century including the twenty-five classes 1872 - 1896. A circular dated April 15, 1897 was sent to the Alumni of classes '72 - 93. In November, 1900, only 769 returns had been received. These letters had been placed on file in the several classes but had not been compiled for printing. Several of the Alumni who were interested in the further prosecution of the work then generously contributed a sum of money towards defraying the expenses of collecting additional material and preparing it for the press. A new circular was prepared, dated Dec. 13, 1900, and sent to all the alumni who had not responded to the former circular. It was also sent to the home address (residence when in college) of non-graduate members of the same classes. The editor desired thus to enlarge the scope of the work, because in this way only can a complete idea of the influence of the college be given. Many of those who for various reasons were obliged to relinquish the college course received impressions and influences from the college which directed or modified their subsequent work in life.
