Excerpt from The Principles of Equity: Treatise, System of Justice Administered; Courts of Chancery
The objects with which this book was written have been kept in view in preparing the present edition for the press. Its general plan and the details of its arrangement have not been altered. No change has been made in the numeration of the sections, or in the order of treating the different subjects which are discussed. It had been deemed advisable, in the second edition, to make certain additions to many of the chapters - particularly to those on the Rise and Progress of the High Court of Chancery, on Maxims in Equity, on Equitable Assignments, and on Notice; and it had also been thought proper, as a general rule, to illustrate and verify the propositions in the text by an increased number of citations from the reports. These additions have been retained in the present Edition; and some later authorities have likewise been added. It need scarcely be said, also, that such modifications in the statement of legal propositions have been introduced, as were thought to be required by clearness or by changes in the law itself.
It cannot be hoped that these efforts towards improvement have been uniformly successful, but no exertion has been spared to accomplish such a result.
