Excerpt from The Theatre
Architecture is a plastic instrument for service.
Fundamentally utilitarian, its inception, variance, and even very existence, all are due directly to human need. Beauty of form, of proportion and of ornament have existed for thousands of years, and will exist, but there is no Architecture that has ever sprung into being without demand, that has not been modified to meet change in demand, that has ever existed past that period during which it was the most logical, economic and satisfying solution of the problem presented by the needs which it was to fill.
