Photography are listed. These works are registered in Class A and appear also in Part 1A of the Catalog. They are arranged alphabetically under author and are books which consist largely or primarily of reproductions, books which list or describe photographs or works of art (including those devoted to the works of individual artists and photographers) and catalogs of exhibitions.
Bibliographic Data. - Under the heading (name of author or copyright claimant) each main entry includes, as applicable, 1) title; 2) other essential names associated with the work; 3) description of the pictorial content of the item; 4) publisher and place of publication when the publisher and claimant are different (if the address is given in the statement of copyright facts, the claimant arid the publisher are the same); 5) a brief statement describing the physical nature of the material (omitted in Class J when the deposit is a photographic print); and 6) series.
Copyright Data. - The portion of the entry giving the facts of copyright registration begins with the copyright symbol ©. This is followed by 1) name of the copyright claimant, if it differs from the name in the heading (when the copyright symbol follows the name of the author in the heading, it indicates that the author and copyright claimant are the same); 2) for published works, date of publication as given in the application; for unpublished works, the abbreviation "lc" followed by the date of receipt in the Copyright Office of one copy; and 3) the registration number.
The Catalog of Copyright Entries records the claimant in whose name a work is originally registered, and contains no record of subsequent changes of ownership. For information relating to transfer of rights, search in the assignment records of the Copyright Office will be undertaken upon request to the Register of Copyrights and upon payment of the statutory search fee.
Deposit of Copies. - In the case of every copy right entry listed in this part of the Catalog, the deposit of copies (or copy) as required by sections 12, 13 or 215 of Title 17 of the United States Code has been made; or, in the case of published three dimensional works of art, there has been a compliance with section 202.8 (b) of the regulations of the Copyright Office, published in the Code of Federal Regulations, 1949 edition.
Authority. - The Catalog of Copyright Entries is published by authority of sections 210 and 211 of Title 17 of the United States Code. Section 210 provides that the Catalog "shall be admitted in any court as prima facie evidence of the facts stated therein as regards any copyright registration."
Organisation of the Catalog. - This issue of the Catalog is part of Volume 4 of the Third Series. The parts are numbered according to the alphabetical sequence of classes as listed in section 5 of Title 17 of the United States Code. Letters are added to the part numbers to indicate subdivisions.
The classes of material principally contained in each part are listed, together with their respective symbols, under the title of the part in the Table of Organization which faces the title page in this issue. In each case, the first letter of the symbol is that of the class under which registration is made; the second, if any, is a designation added by the Copy right Office for purposes of statistical analysis of registrations. Foreign works for which two copies have been deposited, under Section 215, are distinguished by a zero immediately following the class symbol. The symbol R does not represent a class designated by the Copyright Act, but has been adopted by the Copyright Office to distinguish renewal copyright registrations.
