Himachal Pradesh lies between 30°22?and 33°12? North latitude and between 75°22? and 79°4? East longitude. To the North-East, it forms India’s border with Tibet, to its North-West lies the state of Jammu & Kashmir, while Uttar Pradesh lies in the South-East, the state of Haryana in the South and Punjab on the South-West. Mount Karol is a small group of mountains in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Solan is known for many "firsts". India"s first brewery Mohan-Meakin Ltd. was set-up here in 1855 AD. Asia"s first University of Horticulture and Forestry is also located near Nauni village. Officially the city had been declared "Mushroom City of India" on September 10, 1997. Besides one of largest off-season vegetable producer district, Solan is also a commercial and industrial district of Himachal Pradesh. The study site is 5 km from the town, located at an altitude of 7000 ft. Karol Mountain is clearly visible from Solan. The study area is dominated by the thick forest of Quercus leucotrichophora, Pinus roxburghii and scanty population of Rhododendron arboreum and Cedrus deodara.
