In giving this work to the profession the author wishes it understood that he lays no claim to the methods of analysis other that some modifications and details of handling. In cases where recently developed methods are given and where it has been possible to locate the name of the author, credit has been given for same.

No methods are given which have not been tried out, and, in every case, that method is given which has proved the best for general use in the iron and steel works laboratory.

It has been the aim of the author to exclude all unnecessary matter and to make the work one of ready reference for the inexperienced chemist, and to give the best methods for the "Commercial Analysis" of Iron and Steel works materials.
