Excerpt from Bulletin of the Iowa Agricultural College, Experiments, Department of Agriculture, 1886
The work of the experimental station is to substitute facts for uncertainties. An experiment, in order to be of value to the farmer, must be carefully conducted and all facts preserved. In order that it be authentic it should be carried on for a series of years, and the result of the different years combined to make up the final result. In issuing this bulletin of experiments we present to the public such facts as we have been able to glean from our work during the year. We present to you, both our successes and failures, in the hope that you may find something that will aid you in your work. The farming period of 1888 may be noted as one of extreme drought; the facts herein given are, therefore, for a dry year.
The thanks of the Department are due to the President and Board of Trustees for the hearty support they have given in this work; to Willet M. Hays, B. S. A., for his faithful service in conducting the details of the experiments; to Francis S. Schoenleber, B. S. A., the Department Assistant, and to Mr. S. A. Beach, a member of the Junior class, for his care of the grasses.
