Trichomoniasis is a common, sexually transmitted infection caused by the flagellated protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Symptoms include vaginitis and urethritis. Infections have been associated with pre-term deliveries, low birth weight, increased infant mortality as well as predisposing to HIV/AIDS and cervical cancer. To establish and determine the prevalence of T. vaginalis in adult rural females using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-ELISA technique and relate this to a few selected socio-economic factors that may influence prevalence, a peep through this very important parasites therefore is quite timely.
