Tuberculosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality and continues to be one of the serious diseases in the world. The disease is so dreadful that it has been referred to as “Captain of all the men of deaths”. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared tuberculosis as a global emergency in 1993 and currently the tuberculosis control and management is becoming worse due to existence of extensively drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) worldwide. The present work is an outcome of my investigations carried out from tuberculosis patients at a large tertiary care hospital in India. High prevalence of drug resistance, rate of MDR-TB cases and existence of XDR-TB strains in this areas are thought provoking aspects for tuberculosis case management and control programme.Genetics of drug resistance & their transmission are also discussed with their usefulness to make a effort to control tuberculosis.
