Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Sydney Dobell, Vol. 2 of 2
This year began anxiously for Sydney Dobell. The improvement in his wife's case showed itself to be less radical, and more temporary, than he had dared hope. His own health was breaking more and more under the constant mental strain to which the conditions of his life exposed him.
The book he published in the course of this year - a collection of Ballads, entitled 'England in Time of War,' - the writing of which he had regarded as the mere filling in of an interval before a more settled and organised existence should permit work of greater magnitude, and of a more consecutive kind - proved to be his last considerable literary venture.
