In giving, this volume to the public, the compiler deems it advisable to state that it has been prepared under the supervision of the Mayor and Council of the City of Quincy, and others who are thoroughly acquainted with her history and business; and the facts and figures have been obtained from sources of unquestionable authority, and may be relied upon as correct. Owing to the fact that no publication of this kind has been heretofore attempted in our city, and that no business returns have been collected or preserved in former years, the author regrets that he is unable to illustrate her progress in a manner at all detailed. It is to be hoped that in future, more efforts will be made by the citizens of Quincy, to direct public attention to this point as one of the most eligible in the West.
