Excerpt from The Personal Government of Charles I, Vol. 1 of 2: A History of England From the Assassination of the Duke of Buckingham to the Declaration of the Judges on Ship-Money, 1628 1637
The two volumes now published will bring the reader to the threshold of the Puritan Revolution, as the demonstration in the streets of London at the execution of the sentence upon Prynne, Burton, and Bastwick, together with the almost simultaneous demonstration at Edinburgh upon the introduction of the new Prayer Book, may fairly be regarded as the starting points of the movement. The period of nine years here treated of is one in which many causes were at work to undermine the Royal authority, and an accurate knowledge of these less exciting times is therefore absolutely indispensable to the formation of a sober judgment on the more stirring events which followed. Hitherto no book has come into existence which has even professed to trace the gradual change which came over English feeling year by year; even Ranke, who has poured a flood of light on the foreign relations of the country, and who has elucidated its domestic affairs so far as he was able to do so by the light thrown on them by the despatches of foreign diplomatists, having left much room for further and more detailed enquiry.
