Excerpt from History of Charles the First and the English Revolution, Vol. 2 of 2
In the Appendix to this Volume will be found some valuable despatches from the Dutch Ambassadors in London to the States-General, in reference to the trial and execution of Charles I. His Majesty the King of the Netherlands had the goodness to direct that the Archives of his kingdom and family, at the Hague, should be thrown open to me, and that I might take copies of any documents I might need. I envy the friends of truth and learning the pleasure of paying due homage to this act of royal liberality: for my own part, I must rest content with merely expressing my gratitude - anything more would be considered flattery.
