The substance of the following pages was the theme of an address by me before the Dean, the Faculty, and Students of the General Theological Seminary of the United States, delivered at St. Peter's Hall, city of New York, April 18, 1882. I selected the subject, not only because it carries with it valuable and interesting principles, but as, also, appropriate to a time when I was honored by being elected trustee of that institution, and to the place vacated by the death of the distinguished jurist and scholar, the venerable Samuel B. Ruggles.
