Excerpt from History of the First New Hampshire Regiment in the War of the Revolution
The story of the American Revolution has been often written, and most readers are familiar with its prominent features of toils, privation and battles, as well as with the lives of its noted warriors and statesmen. But history like science and the arts is progressive, and we now desire to see details, we wish to know more of the every day life of that period, the names and doings of the humbler officers and men who were the participators in the long marches and sufferings, and also in the battles which produced such glorious results. But so far our history seems deficient in these particulars, as well as in giving us any information of the manner in which regiments were raised, armed, clothed, and supplied with the resources for war.
