Excerpt from With the Green Howards in South Africa 1899-1902
From month to month during the late war, I regularly sent home to the Editor of The Green Howard's Gazette a short letter, descriptive of our movements in the field. These I have now endeavoured to arrange in a more readable and extended form, my object being to place on record some account of the part taken by the old 19th in the recent conflict in South Africa. Lieutenant W. G. Tarbet has kindly given me permission to make use of his letters on the work of the 4th Battalion Mounted Infantry, which were also written for our regimental Gazette. They appear almost verbatim.
For the account of the services of the 2nd Mounted Infantry, in which we were also represented, my thanks are due to Major M. H. Tomlin and Private S. Fallowell, as well as to all those who have kindly lent me their photographs or otherwise assisted me.
