Since the portrait of Washington, by Gilbert Stuart, known as the "Gibbs-Channing" portrait, passed into the possession of the present owner, he has often been requested to loan it for various public exhibitions, to allow it to be reproduced in different forms, and as often has been solicited to furnish information as to its history.
