There are two Manuals and two books for pupils: the one set for Primary Grades, and containing fifty For Grammar pictures in each; the other set for Grammar Grades, with forty pictures in each. The Grades pictures used in the Manuals are in each case repeated in the pupils' books.
The Manuals are designed to aid teachers in imparting to children a true appreciation of, and love for, the paintings by the world's great masters. Pictures of famous and beautiful paintings are already becoming widely used in elementary schools, and it is proposed to shape a course in picture study which shall carry the pupil through the chief schools of painting.
The arrangement of the books is such that each school is represented by four or five of its most famous examples, Plan of the which will be studied with a view to the appropriateness of their subjects to the months of the school year.
With each painter represented is a good biography, a bibliography of works of reference about him and his school, together with criticisms by famous men who have made his works their study.
Suggestions as to the method to be pursued by the teacher are printed with each picture. In place of the biography, bibliography, criticism, and method which appear in the Manuals, the pictures in the pupils' books are accompanied by one page Pupils Books each of text containing a verse or two germane to the subject of the picture facing it.
