Excerpt from The Mechanism of Men-of-War: Being a Description of the Machinery, to Be Found in Modern Fighting Ships

A book of this description must necessarily be more or less of a compilation, and I have to express my gratitude to the numerous authorities who have so kindly given me permission to make free use of the information derived from them.

Among these I would mention the United States Government, who, through their Naval Attache, Lieut.-Commander Cowles, gave me permission to quote as I pleased from their invaluable "Naval Progress." I am in hopes that the book may be of interest not only to the professional engineer, but also to such of the general public as concern themselves with naval matters. I have tried to write in as popular a style as I could, but it must be confessed that treatises on technical subjects have to remain, in a great measure, technical still.
