The single-phase shunt induction motor differs from the ordinary type in that its rotor is equipped with a commutator, upon which bear two pairs of short-circuited brushes for each pair of poles on the motor. The brushes of one set are immediately under the center of the poles, and those of the other set are at right angles thereto. Obviously, the effect is a permanent short-circuiting of the armature windings in two planes, one parallel with and the other perpendicular to the flux from the stator field windings.
To determine the speed variation possible with this type of motor, a Westinghouse compensated series motor was altered to conform with the above conditions.
