Excerpt from Pittsburgh Commodity Index, Vol. 1
In presenting this work for the consideration of buyers, the Pittsburgh Industrial Development Commission has endeavored to perform a service to the community in general and to local manufacturers and jobbers in particular. The enormous and unparalleled growth which has been enjoyed by manufacturers in the Pittsburgh district is so well known that the stupendous task involved in the classifying of the commodities manufactured and sold in this district can be readily appreciated.
The sole purpose has been to make accessible to immediate reference every commodity that Pittsburgh can provide.
Recently, at the expense of this Commission, the first census of the Pittsburgh metropolitan district was compiled, showing that 8365,000,000 is spent annually for material by local manufacturers alone. Not all of these materials are supplied by local producers, and buyers are often ignorant of the fact that certain commodities, for which they are not regularly in the market, are readily available at home.
It is not commonly known that the manufactured products of the Pittsburgh district exceed those of any one of twenty entire states. Moreover, the fact is not generally known that the diversified products of Pittsburgh, exclusive of all metals, glass or electrical products, exceed the entire product of twelve individual states. These facts make it apparent that such a work as this has been a long deferred necessity. Approximately 20,000 commodities are listed in this. book, representing the products of more than 1,600 manufacturers and nearly 800 jobbers; the classification of jobbers being restricted to those who carry stock on hand.
