Excerpt from Feeling: Psychologically Treated, and Prolegomena to Psychology
Ours is an age of specialization. The details of knowledge lie scattered about us in enormous and ever-increasing heaps, with as yet little organization. No science, since the decline if not dethronement of Philosophy, has been able to vindicate itself as the ordering principle of our chaotic piles of experience. Still the prayers for some such science have become loud, and endeavors have been made to point it out in an uncertain, temporizing manner. But when an attempt to formulate it is made, we behold little else than a hasty retreat to some by gone philosophical system. In such an emergency all are turning to a new science, or rather to an old science rejuvenating itself with a new spirit and aspiration.
