О книге

Excerpt from The Modern Standard Drama, Vol. 5: A Collection of the Most Popular Acting Plays, With Critical Remarks, Also the Stage Business, Costumes, Etc

George Colman was born at Florence early in 1732, his father, who had married a sister of the Countess of Bath, being at the time His British Majesty's resident at the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. His father dying soon after, the care of young Colman was assumed by his aunt's husband, William Pulteney, afterwards Earl of Bath. By him he was sent to St. Peter's College, Westminster, where he received his early education, and began to evince a taste for poetry and the belles lettres; and the frequent admonitions contained in the letters of his patron, show that he had, even at that time, a predilection for the attractions of the theatre. Among his school companions were Robert Lloyd, Churchill the satirist, Bonnel Thornton, Warren Hastings, and others afterwards distinguished. Colman subsequently became a student at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1751, having the distinction of being at the head of the list of scholars who were sent thither from Westminster. While there he was engaged with his friend Thornton in the publication of a well-known periodical paper called The Connoisseur, which was continued from January 1st, 1754, to Sept. 20th, 1755. Taking into consideration the youth and inexperience of the writers, this collection of essays shows scholarship and ability of no ordinary kind.

Being called upon to choose a profession, Colman fixed upon the law, was admitted into the Society of Lincoln's Inn, and in due season called to the bar. He continued in the study and practice of his profession till the end of the year 1759; finding leisure, however, to attend his favourite diversion of "running after plays," and indulge, more or less, his inclination for literary pursuits.
