Excerpt from History of Prices: Since the Year 1850
Thirty years have elapsed since the last issue of Tooke and Newmarch's "History of Prices," and the interval has been one of the greatest commercial activity. It may appear surprising that so long a period has been allowed to pass without a review of the trade of nations in connection with the rise and fall of prices, but the magnitude of the undertaking has possibly deterred many competent persons. The utility of such a work, for the sake of reference, is beyond all question, and it only remains for the public to decide whether the task has fallen into proper hands.
