We have here the first proposition of human reason, as it shaped itself in the Hebrew mind. Whatever the learned may think of the authorship and antiquity of the Book of Genesis, there can be no doubt of the high antiquity of this proposition, of this doctrine, that God made heaven and earth. It is a great deal older than the Book of Genesis, as old almost as human reason itself. Here it stands in the fore-front of Hebrew literature, the morning-star of Semitic revelation, the first, impregnable position as it is the last result of human wisdom, the beginning and end of all rational cosmogony.
