Excerpt from Chicago Bears

The University of Illinois football team of 1917 was something less than sensational. True, it had beaten Wisconsin and Purdue and had played a scoreless tie with Chicago, which, in those days, was as famed for the toughness of its football players as for the loftiness of its scholastic standards. But the Illini of '17, at best, were undistinguished.

Nevertheless, as he stood before the squad at the annual football banquet at the Urbana-Lincoln Hotel, Coach Bob Zuppke frankly hated to bid the boys good-by. His nasal voice was pitched high in querulous complaint as he warmed up to his speech.

"Why is it," he protested, "that just when my players begin to know something about football after three years - then I lose 'em?"

"Zup" didn't realize it, but with those words he was launching one of the greatest and most enduring gridiron dynasties in sports history - the mighty Chicago Bears. In the two decades since Zuppke inadvertently started it all, the Bears have won more championships than any other professional team; they have made the T formation almost a national institution; they have filled the record books with lasting evidence of their greatness, and they have hitched their golden chariot to a host of stars.

It takes no football astronomer to recount the exploits of such men as Guy Chamberlain, "Paddy" Driscoll, "Hunk" Anderson, Harold "Red" Grange, Bronko Nagurski, Jack Manders, Bill Hewitt, Luke Johnsos, Beattie Feathers, George McAfee, Joe Stydahar, and Sid Luckman.
